Digital Signage explained – What is a DEP?

Different pieces of digital signage hardware are used to provide different dynamic signage campaigns.

We have all seen the massive video wall created by “tiling” 42” LCD televisions together to form a large video wall. These are specifically manufactured with a small bezel, making the screen as large as possible; this gives the appearance of a large television display.

DEPs are Digital Escalator Panels, these are the digital displays that are sited on escalators and travelators at airports and other transport facilities. Digital signage panels are recessed into the walls to prevent damage, either by accident or on purpose.

DEPs are used throughout the world from London tube stations to JFK airport. These are normally networked, so that all the digital signs can have fresh content updated on a regular basis, all from one central control centre.

The size range is small one, from 26 to 32 inches, this allows them to be sited in areas that would normally not fit a digital signage of 40 inches and above. So marketing people got together with the manufacturers in the digital signage industry to create these DEPs.

Now these are used to promote car hire companies, hotels and attractions at airports, similar things are advertised in tube stations, some designers are using the ones on the London underground to promote and increase brand awareness for their new range of clothing, as well as giving current promotions.

Now DEPs, are used along side DiDs and standalone digital signs to promote brands and promote merchandise in every single location.
